Urgent Appeal for the Release of Nagwa Musa Konda, Sudanese Peacebuilder
The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security calls for the immediate release of Nagwa Musa Konda, a respected Sudanese women’s rights activist and peace campaigner. Recent reports that Ms. Konda has been sentenced to one year’s imprisonment, following her prolonged detention by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North (SPLM-N), are exceptionally alarming.
GIWPS has proudly worked with Ms. Konda on Women, Peace and Security issues in Sudan and globally. She has spent decades doing humanitarian work, advocating for women’s and children’s rights, and leading peacebuilding efforts in Sudan, particularly in the Nuba Mountains.
In Sudan, like so many countries around the world, women peacebuilders face unique threats, and this escalation against Ms. Konda is part of a dangerous trend. GIWPS calls on the international community to use all available diplomatic tools to push for Ms. Konda’s release, to support human rights and peacebuilding in Sudan, and to push for the protection of civilians and an end to Sudan’s brutal ongoing conflict.
