Climate Security

The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) is at the forefront of exploring the intersection of gender, climate, and security—a critical nexus shaping peace and resilience globally. GIWPS recognizes climate change as a threat multiplier that exacerbates fragility and disproportionately affects women in conflict-affected and climate-vulnerable settings. Our Institute fosters a research and policy agenda that aims to ensure women’s leadership is central to climate resilience and peacebuilding. We see inclusive climate action as a “benefit multiplier” that advances gender equality and promotes better climate and security outcomes.

Our Climate Security portfolio bridges policy gaps across the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda and global climate frameworks and produces groundbreaking research and practical policy tools. GIWPS is also a leader in bringing gender-responsive perspectives to climate action through impactful global convenings—from youth empowerment to high-level diplomacy and frontline adaptation. We regularly participate in key international fora and UN Climate Forums, like COP and UN Climate Week.

Through this work, GIWPS has positioned itself as a thought leader and convener at the nexus of climate, gender, and security. By producing actionable research, shaping international policy debates, and amplifying women’s grassroots leadership, the institute strives to provide a roadmap for more inclusive, effective, and sustainable responses to the global climate crisis.
