What to Know

Conflict between state forces and strengthening extremist groups, democratic erosion, and climate change events threaten the safety and participation of women in Niger. Instability deepened after the 2023 coup that ousted the democratically elected president, with military officials justifying their takeover by citing the government’s weak security response. In March 2025, the head of the military junta was sworn in for a five-year term under a new charter that replaced the country’s constitution and effectively entrenched military rule. The power vacuum created by the coup, the end of longstanding security partnerships with France and the US, and Niger’s March 2025 withdrawal from a regional military cooperation have allowed armed extremist groups to expand their influence, exposing women to greater insecurity. These political and security crises are compounded by worsening climate shocks, including prolonged droughts that intensify food and water scarcity and magnify women’s vulnerability.
