What to Know
What to KnowIsrael’s more than two-year offensive into Gaza marks a devastating escalation after decades of intermittent conflict, which has persisted since the 1947 UN plan to partition the then-British Mandate of Palestine. Fighting began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israeli communities, killing over 1,100 Israelis and taking approximately 250 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 70,000 Palestinians to date, and in September 2025, a UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel is responsible for the commission of genocide in Gaza. Civilians comprise an estimated 83 percent of deaths, a figure that is likely substantially underreported. Famine was declared in Gaza City after the Israeli government repeatedly blocked humanitarian aid from entering Gaza. In February 2025, the Israeli government implemented the controversial US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation–an aid distribution system that has failed to meet the scale of need and exposed Palestinians to deadly attacks at food sites, including women killed on days reserved exclusively for them. The UN has described Israel’s use of starvation and systemic sexual, reproductive, and gender-based violence against Gazans as weapons of war. Although a ceasefire deal is in place since October 9, 2025, both parties have been accused of violating the agreement and implementation remains tenuous.
