What to Know
What to KnowNigerian women and girls continue to endure widespread sexual abuse, kidnapping, forced marriage, and displacement as a result of ongoing instability and violence fueled by extremist groups, separatist movements, religious and ethnic tensions, and farmer-herder conflicts. Mass abductions are an increasing tactic of insurgents and bandits. The Boko Haram group, for instance, has targeted women and girls in the northeastern states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa since 2009, including the abduction of 276 schoolgirls in 2014. Climate and economic challenges further drive armed conflict. Droughts and extreme heat have destroyed crops and increased conflict over land and resources. Nigeria has also been mired in a generational cost-of-living crisis since 2023, which has caused prices for basic goods to skyrocket and plunged many into poverty.
