The Taliban’s assault on human rights and fundamental freedoms in Afghanistan continues to grow. Afghans today face a dire humanitarian crisis, and women and girls are systematically excluded from all spheres of public life. The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and The Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics at Georgetown University will host a private screening of “The Sharp Edge of Peace,” which follows four courageous women on the Afghan government’s negotiating team as they risk their lives to negotiate for peace–and their rights–with the Taliban from 2020 – 2021. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Afghan women to discuss how the situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated since the United States’ withdrawal in 2021, the horrific plight women and girls face under the Taliban regime, and opportunities to advance women’s rights and peace and security in the country. The event will bring together students, professors, and policymakers as we recognize the strength of women in Afghanistan, celebrate their resilience, and call on the international community to uplift their voices.
