What to Know
What to KnowWomen in Lebanon are struggling to rebuild after the latest wave of conflict amidst protracted economic crisis and sustained regional volatility. Israel invaded Lebanon on October 1, 2024, after Hezbollah—an Islamist armed group and political party—began launching rockets at Israel following the October 7 Hamas attack. This escalation between Hezbollah and Israel was the largest since the 2006 Lebanon War, causing heavy civilian casualties, displacement, and widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure across southern Lebanon. Women and children comprise 70 percent of people internally displaced, while fighting disrupts women and girls’ access to food, medical care, and education. Access to these resources is further strained by ongoing economic devastation magnified by the pandemic, the 2020 Port of Beirut explosion, and declining tourism. Although a fragile ceasefire has been in place since November 2024, Hezbollah is now resisting a plan by the Lebanese cabinet to disarm the group, threatening to plunge the country into civil war and evoking memories of the 1975-1990 civil war, which killed up to 150,000 people.
