What to Know
What to KnowSince President Nicolás Maduro’s 2013 election, Venezuela has experienced economic collapse, hyperinflation, mass emigration, and increasingly autocratic governance. Under Maduro, dissent was repressed; those targeted by the state for their opposition or activism—including female detainees—have reported sexual violence, torture, harassment, and overcrowding. In 2024, Maduro claimed to win the presidential election over Nobel-winner María Corina Machado’s opposition party, an outcome disputed by international observers. Now, following the seizure of President Maduro by the US, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has been appointed Venezuela’s interim leader. Although Rodríguez has indicated openness to working with the US to increase oil production and has released a limited number of detainees, immense political and economic uncertainty remains.
