Invisible Nation: A Film Screening and Discussion on Taiwan’s Fight to Safeguard Democracy
Caught between the geopolitical forces of the United States and China for the last four decades, Taiwan has simultaneously undergone a sweeping domestic transformation while navigating complex cross-strait relations with China and an evolving role on the global stage. The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and the Georgetown Alexander Hamilton Society will host a screening of Invisible Nation, a documentary offering unprecedented access to Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan’s first female president, as she walks a tightrope between preserving Taiwan’s hard-won democracy, autonomy, and freedom, and securing its place on the world stage. The film traces how decades of social movements and political change culminated under President Tsai’s leadership, including student-led democracy movements, the legalization of same-sex marriage, and a culture of gender equality, while capturing the urgency of Taiwan’s struggle for full international recognition amid rising authoritarianism.
Ambassador Alexander Tah-ray Yui, Taiwan’s Representative to the United States, will give opening remarks. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion examining Taiwan’s domestic transformation alongside its security in an increasingly complex regional environment. Panelists will bring perspectives on gender equality, Taiwan’s increasing dominance in the semiconductor economy, and Taiwan’s security in a complex regional environment. The event will bring together students, scholars, and policymakers to recognize Taiwan’s historical progress, the legacy of President Tsai, and the hopes for its future.
