Summary

The author responds to a piece written by Martin Van Creveld that aims to convince readers that 1) militaries are in decline and the ‘feminisation’ of militaries is either a symptom or cause of this; and 2) that the absoprtion of women into armed forces cannot be interpreted as a ‘gain’ for women in terms of gender equality. Pulling experiences from her research, including her book Women and War (New York: Basic Books, 1987) she presents a counter argument to his main thesis.
