Gender and Security Toolkit – Tool 3: Defence and Gender

Summary

This Tool is part of the DCAF, OSCE/ODIHR, UN Women Gender and Security Toolkit, which comprises nine Tools and a series of Policy Briefs. This new DCAF, OSCE/ODIHR, UN Women Gender and Security Toolkit draws together the key lessons of the past decade in promoting gender equality in security and justice, and this Tool focuses on the defence sector. The aim of the Toolkit is to share new and emerging good practices, reflecting on how they have been developed. It is designed to help security and justice sector institutions, including armed forces and other defence institutions, to integrate a gender perspective. The defence sector needs to move beyond simply increasing the numbers of women and become more aware of and responsive to the different gendered needs of the entire population. In doing so, a key priority must be to pay attention to the often-neglected security needs of women and girls. The Gender and Security Toolkit will, the authors hope, be used by many different audiences in many ways.
