Iranians are Making History
Iran is one month into historic protests, the most widespread since the overthrow of the Shah. These multigenerational protests have been brutally suppressed by the Iranian regime. Iranian officials report a death toll of over 5,000 people, but witnesses inside Iran are reporting that the death toll is far greater, likely upwards of 35,000. In addition, thousands of detained protesters face the imminent threat of execution.
This oped in Politico—authored by several distinguished Iranian women with whom we have been privileged to work—argues that the “scale, organization and intent of this repression meets the legal threshold for crimes against humanity as defined under the 1998 Rome Statute that founded the International Criminal Court.”
With that comes an obligation for the international community to assist and, where necessary, take collective action in support of the Iranian people. The authors recommend these 6 actions.
