What to Know
What to KnowPost-election unrest, armed conflict, and climate-induced displacement have undermined women’s security and participation. Since 2017, an Islamic State-linked insurgency has gripped Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado, driven in part by socio-economic exclusion from major mineral and hydrocarbon discoveries. The conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands and disrupted communities, with insurgents targeting civilians and vital infrastructure. Women and girls are particularly affected, as they comprise 98 percent of reported victims of increased gender-based violence by non-state armed groups. Recurrent climate shocks from cyclones and droughts compound gendered impacts, straining humanitarian resources for internally displaced persons—of whom 80 percent are women and children.
