What to Know

Women in Myanmar are caught in the crossfire of the conflict as the military junta struggles to maintain control following the February 2021 military coup that tipped nearly 80 years of insurgency and inter-ethnic conflict into full-scale civil war. Since then, ethnic armed organizations, pro-democracy activists, and ousted lawmakers have formed a broad resistance to the junta. While the military retains control of major population centers and strategic areas, resistance groups have made significant territorial gains, particularly in border and rural areas. Elections held in early 2026 were widely criticized as illegitimate and have  resulted in a further entrenched military rule. Former democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was arrested during the 2021 coup, remains in detention after being convicted on a series of charges widely criticized as politically motivated.

Displacement, economic instability, and widespread human rights abuse remain pervasive, with the military and other armed groups reportedly responsible for attacks against civilians, including arbitrary detention, and sexual violence. Targeted violence against the Rohingya, including the military’s 2017 expulsion of more  than 740,000 people has since been recognized as a genocide. More than one million Rohingya refugees—75 percent of which are women and children—are still living in refugee camps in Bangladesh, where women and girls lack security, privacy, and adequate sanitation and menstrual supplies. The catastrophic March 2025 earthquake further compounded an already severe humanitarian crisis, destroying homes, health facilities, and infrastructure while deepening  women’s exposure to violence and displacement.
