Side Event at the United Nations
After fourteen years of struggle against authoritarianism in Syria—endured by the Syrian people, particularly women, through violence, detention, and displacement—the country continues to experience violent incidents that expose the deep fractures within its social fabric. The recent escalations witnessed across different regions, including the coast, the south, and Sweida Governorate, are stark reminders of the fragility of stability, peace, and coexistence in Syria.
This event aimed to reimagine Syria’s future: one that acknowledges the legacy of authoritarian governance, the protracted conflict, and its devastating impact on the social, economic, political, and cultural fabric, particularly on women and marginalized communities. The discussion focused on pathways toward a just peace and inclusive democracy, highlighting the centrality of women’s perspectives in transitional justice and state-building processes to uphold equality, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.
This event was hosted by the Syrian Women’s Political Movement and co-sponsored by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security.
