Summary

This journal article explores the leadership of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Liberia’s first female president. Women were largely separated from discredited political elites during the years of civil year, and they are have achieved political legitimacy by virtue of their non-involvement with those actors. Johnson-Sirleaf embodies this newly-gained legitimacy. Her election and governance has empowered women’s movements in Liberia.
