What to Know
What to KnowMore than a decade of civil war has left Yemeni women and girls facing a staggering humanitarian crisis, marked by escalating repression and the daily struggle for survival. The conflict, which began in 2014 between the internationally recognized government and Houthi rebels, remains deeply entangled in regional dynamics. Houthis—who control around 28 percent of Yemen’s territory containing up to 80 percent of its population—have launched repeated attacks in the Red Sea, despite fighting between the Houthis and the internationally recognized government largely abating. Houthi strikes have been motivated by support for regional allies, including Iran and Hamas. In response, Israel and the United States have carried out retaliatory attacks, killing civilians and disrupting humanitarian aid deliveries upon which women and girls depend.
