What to Know

The Central African Republic (CAR) has been engaged in a civil war between non-state actors and the government since 2013, leaving women and girls at continued risk of violence and instability. The war commenced when Seleka forces, an alliance of mainly Muslim armed groups, captured the nation’s capital and overthrew the government. Religious and ethnic identities are at the core of the conflict, as Christian anti-balakas militias organized to counter Seleka and to attack Muslim citizens. Sporadic fighting continues despite the signing of a 2019 peace agreement, in part due to its lack of inclusivity. Intercommunal tensions exacerbate violence as pastoralists and farmers clash over control of land access and livestock management. Scarce resources, attacks on civilian infrastructure, and an influx of more than one million refugees from Chad and Sudan—many of whom are women and girls—have caused a humanitarian crisis poised to fuel continued conflict.
