June 2, 2020 – The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security joins the leadership of Georgetown University in solidarity with the Black community in the continuing struggle against racism and injustice.
As an Institute dedicated to peace and security, the current situation demands our focused attention and vigorous engagement.
We strongly condemn police violence, racism and white supremacy in all their forms and deeply grieve the killings of George Floyd in Minnesota, Breonna Taylor in Kentucky, and Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia as the most recent unconscionable acts of hatred and violence.
As scholars and practitioners in the field of women, peace and security globally, there is much more we can and must do in our own country. Our work for peace and security requires us to challenge systems of injustice – racism, sexism, xenophobia and bigotry – wherever they occur.
Even as we strive to be inclusive and to amplify the voices of those who are marginalized, we must redouble our commitment and efforts – individually and collectively – to support Black women’s leadership and engage in this work as agents of peace and healing in the United States.
Each of us is called today to stand against injustice and the wanton murders of our fellow citizens, and to renew a nation dedicated to upholding the values of justice and equality for all.
Ever onwards,
The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security
