Student Research Assistant – Afghanistan

The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) is looking to engage an enthusiastic Georgetown student to assist the Institute’s Senior Fellow, Palwasha Hassan, with research, writing and administrative duties. This includes ongoing projects on a roadmap for peace in Afghanistan, solutions to the economic crisis, and other advocacy and organizing efforts in support of Afghan women. The preferred candidate will have a strong background in international relations and women’s issues, with preference for a background in Afghanistan and South Asia. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Performing background research and assisting with literature reviews of relevant topics

  • Supporting interviews with experts and practitioners and summarizing content

  • Assisting with the collection and analysis of data

  • Preparing and maintaining data records of interviews and safeguarding confidentiality 

  • Attending key meetings and taking notes, including the Afghan Women Policy Collective and Economic Working Group led by the Senior Fellow

  • Providing editing support for all English language products

 

Background and skills:

  • Georgetown University undergraduate student 

  • Strong background in international relations and women’s issues; experience with Afghanistan and South Asia preferred

  • Excellent writing, editing and communications skills

  • Experience working in sensitive cross-cultural environments and supporting high-level meetings and events

  • Dari/Pashto language abilities are helpful but not required 

 

The student research assistant should be available to join the team as soon as possible and expect to work 15-20 hours/week through the summer. The expected wage for this work is commensurate with experience but will be between $15.20-$16.00/hour.
