Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff to join US, Swedish and Romanian leaders in discussing the importance of advancing women’s equal political participation ahead of Biden’s second Summit for Democracy

WHAT: Ahead of the second Summit for Democracy, Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff will deliver remarks discussing the importance of advancing full and meaningful political participation and leadership of women and girls and the incorporation of gender equality across democracy-building policies and initiatives. The event at Georgetown University will also spotlight a new USAID initiative to accelerate women’s political participation – the “Network for Gender-Inclusive Democracy” –  as well as efforts by the US Department of State to advance the Presidential Initiatives for Democratic Reform by integrating women into peace building efforts in particularly vulnerable regions around the world. The high-level event will include Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Tobias Billström. It is hosted by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, the governments of Sweden and Romania, and International IDEA who together have formed a Cohort on Gender Equality as a Prerequisite for Democracy.
