World-class schools of global studies must help students contemplate and navigate the heterogeneity of communities and countries.
Extensive experience, in-depth research, and extended discussions underline that a focus on diversity and inclusion is essential for leadership in international affairs.
Today, the ability to navigate diverse spaces and ideas, and to foster inclusion are core professional skills. Our schools must reflect the world around us, and provide students with this cultural competency.
To ensure a focus on diversity and inclusion, we recommend that universities, departments, and programs intentionally strive to:
- Ensure a culture of inclusion where people of different backgrounds and perspectives thrive, including those of different socio-economic status; political perspective; sexes; races; religions; ethnicities; nationalities; ability statuses; gender identities; and sexual orientations.
- Foster diversity among faculty, students, and staff so that the composition of school communities reflects the world around us, with its range of perspectives and priorities.
- Broaden curricula to reflect and address how diversity affects international affairs and how inclusion benefits societies globally.
Particularly important to progress are:
- Explicit leadership–in word and deed–across the scholarly community to celebrate and advance the focus on diversity and the emphasis on inclusion within our communities and across our coursework.
- Recognition that school culture, composition, and curricula go hand-in-hand: diversity and inclusiveness must be prioritized in all three domains for durable progress to be achieved.
- Intentionality in approach. The designation or appointment of responsible individuals, the creation of plans, and the tracking of progress are essential to transformation.
We invite and encourage colleagues to join us in strengthening the teaching and practice of international affairs.
