What to Know

Since Russia’s full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine began in February 2022, Ukrainian women have remained crucial across all aspects of response—delivering humanitarian aid, sustaining recovery and reconstruction efforts, providing social services, and maintaining local and national governance structures. The full-scale invasion marked a dramatic escalation from Russia’s 2014 seizure of Crimea. Ukraine remains committed to reclaiming all sovereign territory, while Russia continues to pursue military objectives despite international condemnation and sanctions. The war has devastated infrastructure, killed thousands of civilians, and produced allegations of war crimes by Russian forces, including child abductions and sexual violence against women and men. Efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire have thus far been unsuccessful.
