The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and the Embassy of Ukraine welcomed Oleksandra Matviichuk, Head of Center for Civil Liberties and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, for a discussion on international accountability for war crimes and conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine.

Following the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin, GIWPS Executive Director, Ambassador Melanne Verveer and Matviichuk discussed the lack of legal accountability for conflict-related sexual violence internationally and how the US can help. Matviichuk highlighted the importance of collecting evidence now for future prosecutions in Ukraine, at an international special tribunal, or at the International Criminal Court. The event included remarks from Oksana Markarova, Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States and Christian Levesque, Director of the War Crimes Accountability Team / Lead Prosecutor for Ukraine, Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section. Participants included multiple personnel of the diplomatic corps, think tanks, NGOs, and university students.
