Celebrating Congressional Women Leaders in Foreign Policy

UN Women, the United Nations Foundation, and the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security honored Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Representative Lois Frankel (D-FL-21) and Representative Susan Brooks (R-IN-05) for their bipartisan efforts to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment in U.S. foreign policy.

Leading women policymakers, diplomats, and business leaders joined the reception, which was intended to galvanize support for women and girls’ issues in the 116th Congress.

Thanks to bipartisan congressional support, the Women, Peace and Security Act of 2017; the Reinforcing Education Accountability in Development Act; the Women’s Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment Act of 2018; and the Protecting Girls’ Access to Education in Vulnerable Settings Act were all passed in the 115th Congress.

The event was hosted by:

  • United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka
  • Executive Director, Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security & Former U.S. Ambassador for Global Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer
