CSW62: Preventing Violent Extremism through Women’s Empowerment at the Community Level

GIWPS Executive Director Ambassador Melanne Verveer spoke at a side event at the 62nd Session of the Commission on the Status Women focused on preventing violent extremism (PVE) at the community level. The event highlighted the role of women in building social cohesion, creating peaceful societies, and preventing violent extremism in rural communities. The Permanent Mission of Japan shared lessons learned from programming on women, peace and security supported by the government of Japan.

Opening remarks were provided by Koro Bessho, Permanent Representative of Japan to the UN; Phumzile Mambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women; and Akiko Yamanaka, Former Japanese Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs. This event was co-organized by the Permanent Mission of Japan to the UN, the Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the UN, Georgetown University’s Institute for Women, Peace and Security, and UN Women.
