Women and Gender Perspectives in the Military

On November 8, 2019, the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security in partnership with the Embassy of Sweden and the Georgetown Center for Security Studies celebrated the new book Women and Gender Perspectives in the Military, edited by Dr. Robert Egnell and Ms. Mayesha Alam.

The book compares the integration of women, gender perspectives, and the WPS agenda into the armed forces of eight countries, as well as NATO and United Nations peacekeeping operations.

Both Dr. Egnell and Ms. Alam have worked with the institute since our founding. Their book was inspired by a GIWPS symposium on gender and military operations, part of our ongoing Bridging Theory and Practice series made possible thanks to the generosity of Nicolaus and Christiane Weickart. Published in 2019 by Georgetown University Press, the book features a foreword by GIWPS executive director Amb. Melanne Verveer.
