Women play multiple roles in conflict situations that extend well beyond the roles of caregivers and victims. For that reason, it is of crucial importance to build on women’s potential in peace-building and to ensure that women are included in economic reconstruction, disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR), and security sector reform (SSR) processes. In Liberia, women have played a significant role in ensuring a sustainable Peace Accord that has laid the basis for the current post-conflict recovery phase. In fact women from all countries in conflict in Africa and the rest of the world have contributed significantly to peace building and conflict prevention. The United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security unanimously adopted in 2000, highlights the agency of women and mandates governments to ensure their inclusion in all processes affecting their peace and security. Liberia in this current post-conflict recovery phase epitomizes the principles and the letter and intent of Resolution 1325 with the UN System playing a critical and central role.
