Recognizing that women’s inclusion in conflict prevention, management, and resolution—as well as post-conflict relief and recovery—advances peace and security. This article explores the Department of Defense’s effort to institutionalize WPS principles. As a relatively new policy initiative, the effort to institutionalize and integrate these principles has required extensive cooperation throughout the Department of Defense, and commitment at a range of leadership levels in Washington and in the field. It will take time before the effort is fully integrated into the guidance documents and training cycles of the Department’s activities. Much, however, has already been accomplished.
