Executive Summary

This chapter explores the economic consequences of conflicts in sub- Saharan Africa by focusing on four key questions:

• How have the prevalence and intensity of conflict evolved over time?

• What is the impact of conflict on economic growth both directly, and indirectly through spillover effects?

• What are the key channels through which conflict affects economic growth?

• What are the fiscal implications of conflict?

The findings presented in this chapter show that the economic impact of conflict in sub-Saharan Africa is large and persistent. The analysis thus highlights the significant costs and formidable challenges faced by countries suffering from conflicts, underscoring the need to prevent their occurrence—including by promoting inclusive economic development and social cohesion.
