Abstract

This chapter explores how gender issues are addressed in post-conflict Security Sector Reform (SSR) processes. It draws upon case studies in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Liberia, Peru, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Timor-Leste to define the concepts of SSR and gender and their relationship with each other. It further addresses the rationale for and experiences of gender mainstreaming in SSR processes, considering women’s participation in post-conflict security services and gender dimensions of disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration.
