Sexual Violence in Haiti’s IDP Camps: Results of a Household Survey
Summary
In January 2011, the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice (CHRGJ) at NYU School of Law conducted a survey of households in four camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in and around Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This briefing paper presents preliminary data from the survey, focusing on reported incidents of sexual violence. An alarming 14% of households surveyed reported that, since the earthquake, one or more members of their household had been victimized by rape or unwanted touching or both.
