Women’s Survival as a Development Problem
Summary
In seeking an explanation of the survival biases against women in large parts of the world (including China, South Asia, West Asia, and North Africa), we have to combine and connect economic and cultural influences. Analyses based on simple East-West contrasts or on “underdevelopment” do not take us very far. The variables that appear to be important-e.g., female employment or female literacy-combine economic and cultural relevance.
